About Mardell Rampton

Mardell Rampton Mardell has worked with textiles and fiber of various types for most of her life. Moving from garment construction, to embroidery, to cross-stitch, to traditional quiltmaking and finally into art quilting, or textile paintings as Mardell refers to her current work. Along the way, there have been delightful and continued excursions into hand dying, hand painting, and surface design and mark making techniques of many kinds.

Mardell uses a combination of her hand dyed, hand painted and commercial cottons to compose her artworks. Each piece is composed of hundreds of individually freehand cut organically shaped rectangles which are sewn together to create the surface layer. When the surface layer is complete, it is layered with bamboo batting and a cotton backing fabric. The entire surface is then densely stitched to add additional texture using a variety of cotton threads.

Mardell's work has been shown in group exhibits across Canada, including 'My Part of the World', 'Art Squared', and 'Dichotomy of Change'. Her work is included in private collections in Canada, the US and Australia.
