As a prairie girl I am well acquainted with life on the surface – grainfields, gophers, elevators and meandering rivers stretching to the horizon under endless skies. It was in the badlands, however, that I came to appreciate the ancient, mysterious foundations of my prairie home. Sculpted valleys reveal evidence of successive floods, ancient beaches, wondrous creatures and the awesome power of nature to shape the earth – a process ongoing today in the formation of towering hoodoos.
